ABOUT US
The Alberta Thoroughbred Aftercare Society (ATAS) is a committed group of individuals who have worked together to create a registered charity for thoroughbred aftercare that is ultimately accredited by the globally recognized Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). TAA is the recognized gold standard in Thoroughbred aftercare & its accreditation involves a rigorous review and inspection process designed to ensure organizations meet established standards in horse care, facility management, organizational operations, education, and adoption practices
We are passionate about the welfare of thoroughbred racehorses both on and off the track. The purpose of ATAS is to provide a safe landing and transition for our thoroughbred racehorses when they are no longer able to compete.
ATAS works to find them loving, adoptive, or sanctuary homes as they move on. We believe OTTBs deserve happy retirements and satisfying second careers in the show ring, as pleasure horses, or as retired or companion animals.
In addition, we have a commitment to educate owners, trainers, breeders and the general public about the merits of thoroughbred Retirement and Aftercare.

A journey dedicated to the welfare of retired Thoroughbreds, tracing our path from a small local initiative to a pillar of aftercare in Alberta.
Origins
Founded by a group of passionate horsemen and women in Alberta, we recognized an urgent need for specialized aftercare that honors the legacy of these incredible athletes.
Milestones
2021 — ATAS is Established
ATAS is founded by passionate horse people in Alberta with the belief that every Thoroughbred deserves a safe and responsible transition when racing ends.
2022–2024 — Building Our Foundation
We strengthen the organization and grow our network of volunteers, donors, supporters and partner farms, all working together to provide rehabilitation, care and opportunities for Thoroughbreds beyond the racetrack.
January 1, 2025 — Official Charitable Status
ATAS achieves official charitable status — an important milestone that allows us to issue charitable tax receipts to our donors and better positions the organization for long-term growth, sustainability and expansion.
2025 — Pursuing TAA Accreditation
With charitable status achieved, ATAS becomes eligible to pursue accreditation with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). This important step reflects our commitment to the highest standards of Thoroughbred aftercare, welfare, governance and responsible placement.
2026 — Expansion & Growth
ATAS continues to grow. We currently care for six Thoroughbreds — Daisy, Elliott, Lucy, CC, Bonnie and Cooper — each receiving the individual care, time and support needed as they prepare for their next chapter and suitable new homes.

Every new donor, volunteer, partner and supporter helps us write the next chapter. Together, we can provide more equine athletes with the retirement they deserve while continuing to expand ATAS, strengthen our programs and grow the services we provide to Alberta’s Thoroughbred community.
