Every Thoroughbred in the Alberta Thoroughbred Aftercare Society program has a story worth telling. Some are preparing for a new riding career. Some are looking for a quieter life as a companion. Meet Daisy
Some horses are destined for the show ring. Others are destined to remind us that simply being loved is enough. Daisy is one of those special horses. Registered as Outlaw Daisy, this beautiful 2019 mare carries an impressive pedigree, with Outwork on the top side and Princess Rocket, by the legendary Curlin, on the bottom.
Her ATAS Journey
Daisy came into the ATAS program after significant damage to her knee. She underwent surgery to remove bone chips and has recovered well, but she is not considered suitable for a riding career. Her path has not always been simple. At one time, Daisy struggled with turnout companions and could be a little too enthusiastic about making friends. Following an emergency fire evacuation, however, she was successfully paired with another horse and has since shown that she can settle happily into a compatible partnership.
The Right Future
Daisy is best suited to a broodmare, companion, pasture-companion or cherished pet home where there is no pressure for her to perform. She deserves the kind of home that sees her worth without asking her to prove it.

Elliot has the kind of story aftercare is made for. Registered as Can Confirm, this 2020 Thoroughbred gelding is by Exaggerator out of Readygetsgold, by Midas Eyes. He is a kind, willing horse who has already shown just how much heart a Thoroughbred can bring to the next phase of life.
His ATAS Journey
Elliot suffered a significant deep digital flexor tendon injury earlier in life. With time, careful rehabilitation and proper management, he successfully progressed through recovery and passed his soundness examination. He has been assessed as suitable for light pleasure and low-level riding.
The Right Future
Elliot's ideal future is one that values longevity over intensity: pleasure riding, flat work, relaxed recreational riding and other appropriate low-impact work. Because of his injury history, he is not intended for high-impact competitive disciplines.

Meet Cooper
Cooper is young, handsome, full of presence and has already had to show more resilience than most horses his age. Registered as Demand, this 2022 chestnut Thoroughbred is by Dialed In out of That's Ok, by Not For Love.
His ATAS Journey
Cooper entered the ATAS program needing significant rehabilitation following surgery for a slab fracture. His recovery has required patience, careful monitoring and a team willing to give him the time he needs rather than rush the process. He has progressed back toward paddock turnout while his comfort and long-term soundness continue to be monitored.
The Right Future
Based on his rehabilitation progress and veterinary guidance, Cooper is expected to be sound for light riding and flat work. His future should be built around appropriate, lower-impact work rather than intensive jumping or demanding high-impact competition. The goal is not simply to get Cooper back into work; it is to give this young horse the best chance at a long, comfortable and useful life.

At 21 years young, Lucy has earned the right to have life revolve around her for a change. Registered as Expect the End, this 2005 mare is by Precise End out of Expect Awhile, by Valid Expectations. She has known both the racetrack and the broodmare life, and she now deserves a future defined by comfort, consistency and affection.

Lucy came to ATAS as a sound, mature mare with a lifetime of experience behind her. She represents an important part of aftercare that is sometimes overlooked: older Thoroughbreds and former broodmares still deserve visibility, opportunity and people willing to choose them.

Meet Bonnie
Bonnie has spent much of her life giving something to others. Registered as Bengal Bonnie, this 2006 bay mare is by Tiger Trap out of My Bonnie Flies, by Dr. Reality. She is a proven broodmare and the dam of multiple winners, carrying with her the quiet legacy of the horses she helped bring into the world.
Her ATAS Journey
When Bonnie first joined the program she could be difficult to catch, but patience and consistent handling changed that story. She has settled into life with ATAS, become comfortable with her caregivers and learned that people can arrive simply to care for her and love on her. Bonnie has also dealt with joint-health concerns, including a previous joint infection, so her long-term comfort remains central to every decision made for her.
The Right Future
Bonnie's best future may be as a cherished companion or in a sanctuary-style retirement placement where her comfort comes first. Any riding possibility would require appropriate veterinary guidance and assessment. Meet CC
CC brings pedigree, maturity and a whole lot of mare personality to the ATAS program. Registered as Courtesy Call, this 2008 Thoroughbred mare is by Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus out of Mary, by Cat Thief. A retired racehorse and proven broodmare, she has already lived more than one Thoroughbred career.

CC is sound and experienced, but like many strong-minded mares she appreciates thoughtful management and the right herd dynamic. Her turnout and feeding arrangements are managed with attention to compatibility so she can feel secure and thrive.

CC may suit a broodmare, companion or potentially pleasure-riding home following appropriate retraining and assessment. She will do best with an experienced horse person who appreciates a mature Thoroughbred mare and is willing to get to know the individual rather than expect a one-size-fits-all horse.
